How to Clean a Cotton Rug

Keep on Top of Dust

Cotton rugs are naturally great at holding on to dust to minimise it flying around your home, so be sure to give your rug a regular vacuum to remove as much as you can. We’d say at least twice a week, more if you can, to keep on top of dust and debris and avoid it getting engrained in the fibres as you walk on them.

Spot Wash Marks and Spills

Unless you live in show home, little marks on your rug will be inevitable. Our cotton rugs are designed to be used and loved in your home so making it easy to remove marks is important to us. Our rugs are flatweave with makes them easier to spot wash as the fibres are smooth and means stains tend to stay on the surface rather than absorbing in to the rug itself. If you do get a mark on your rug, try to treat it as quickly as possible. We favour bio-degradable face wipes as a gentle yet was way to remove small marks and stains they really do work wonders. Just gently dab the mark and they lift off, no muss, no fuss. For spills grab some kitchen towel and soak up as much of the liquid as possible, then sprinkle with bicarbonate of soda, leave for half an hour, then vacuum. Easy peasy.

Pop Them in the Washing Machine

The beauty of small cotton rugs is they can easily be washed in a washing machine to keep them feeling and looking fresh. Just be sure not to overload your machine with too much weight. We like to use a gentle detergent and cycle and then leave to dry flat - ideally outdoors.

Dry-Clean

And of course, if your rug is really too large for your washing machine, a dry-clean once or twice a year is a super way to keep them looking fresh and extend the life of your rug.

Flip Your Rug

Not so much a cleaning but more of a care tip, our cotton rugs are flatweave which means the design is the same on both the front and the back. So just like you would turn a mattress, be sure to flip your rug over once in a while. The fibres will thank you for it.
